Key West is an island in the Straits of Florida on the North American continent at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys. 
It is politically within the limits of the city of Key West in Monroe County, in Florida. Key West city encompasses the island of Key West, the part of Stock Island north of U.S. which means the Overseas Highway (east), Sigsbee Park which was originally known as Dredgers Key (north), Fleming Key (north), and Sunset Key, originally known as Tank Island (west). 

The island is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long and 2 miles (3.2 km) wide. The island, rich in large salt ponds once, now measures 3,370 acres in area since in the late 1950s many of the ponds on the eastern side were filled in, and this nearly doubled the original land mass of the island. Key West is 129 miles (207 km) southwest of Miami, Florida, which is about 160 driving miles (257 km) and 106 miles (170 km) north-northeast of Havana, Cuba.

One of the biggest attractions on the island is a concrete replica of a buoy at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets that claims to be the southernmost point in the conterminous 48 states. Originally the point was only marked with a sign, which was often stolen. As a reaction to this, the city of Key West erected the now famous monument in 1983. It is brightly painted and labeled "SOUTHERNMOST POINT CONTINENTAL U.S.A." and has become one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West.
The paradox is that the so famous southernmost point is not the southernmost point of the continental USA since Key West is an island and therefore not a continental part, but it is part of Florida which is part of the continental United States. The true southernmost point is just west of the buoy in Truman Annex but it has no marker since it is U.S. Navy land and cannot be entered by civilian tourists.
