General Information about Fuerteventura

The island of Fuerteventura in Spain indisputably has the biggest and best beaches in the archipelago. Use your rental car from Economy Car Rentals to visit all of them! Many of its 340 km (211 miles) of coastline consist of white sandy beaches practically untouched and deserted. The sea is also very special here. Fuerteventura's coastal shelf contributes to the existence of shallow transparent waters that acquire an extraordinary turquoise color. The wide variety and wealth of the underwater fauna make it ideal for scuba diving.
Windsurfing is the crown sport in Fuerteventura. Its coasts annually attract thousands of enthusiasts convinced that this is one of the best places in the world to practice windsurfing. Jandia beach has been the site of various world championships in various categories.

Most of the tourism is concentrated in the Jandia peninsula, in the south. This is a nature reserve separated from the rest of the island and bordered almost completely by vast beaches of white sand. To the west, the beaches of Barlovento, somewhat dangerous for swimming, remain almost wild. To the east, a large sandy fringe of some 20 km (12.4 miles) is the site of two tourist resorts: Costa Calma, near the unequaled Playa de Sotavento, and Morro Jable, built around the port where the jet-foil departs for the island of Gran Canaria in Spain.

The central and northern parts of the island boast small tourist resorts. Near the Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) and the capital city, Puerto del Rosario, you find Caleta de Fustes. On the northern coast, Corralejo, near an enormous beach of dunes, is an attractive spot with a fishing port where fresh fish can be savored.
It is also possible to take a trip with your rental car to the nearby volcanic isle of Lobos, as well as Lanzarote.

The zoo is home to a small selection of animals, but the main activities offered are parrot shows, horse rides and camel safaris. While waiting their turn visitors can relax under the palm trees at the zoo’s bar, or try out one of a few seafood restaurants that have sprung up in the village.
La Oliva:
The village of La Oliva was formerly the home of the military governors of the island between the 17th and mid-19th centuries. The Governor’s townhouse has been restored and is open to the public. Also in the centre of the village is the pretty church of Parroquiade Nuestra Seiiora de Candelaria, with a square bell tower and finely carved wooden door. The village also has an art centre exhibiting the work of Canarian artists.
Puerto del Rosario:
The main town of Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario on the western side of the island was once called goat harbour, and even today it is said that goats outnumber people in this whitewashed town. The main street provides some good souvenir shops, the streets have been resurfaced and the harbour promenade rebuilt. The old harbour area features some attractive examples of Canarian architecture and the home of exiled poet Miguel de Unamuno, which has been turned into a museum.
