Portara - the great door:
The most characteristic image of Naxos is the great gate just outside Chora. This is the most photographed spot on the island. The gate was built in the 6th century BC by order of the tyrant Legdames. It was to be a temple to the god Apollo, but the building was abandoned when war broke out between Naxos and Samos. Later, Christians built a church on top of the unfinished temple. A very good time to go to the gate is in the evening when you will get to see a fantastic sunset.
The village Apirantho:
Also called the marble village, since many buildings and streets here are made of marble. It has many beautiful buildings, and you can go to the tower of Zevgoli from the 17th century and the tower of Bardani. There is also a small museum here with various findings from the east part of the island.
The Metropolitan church of Ag Nicodemus and Nectarius was built 1780-87 which was built partly with ancient remains. It holds a priceless New Testament which was given to the church by Catherine of Russia according to tradition.

It took quite a long time to pick up the car as there was only one Avis representative there_ who worked from his car_ and he had another customer ahead of us. (There isn_t an Avis desk in the Naxos airport terminal). The Avis representative wasn_t there to receive the car when we returned it at the agreed date _ time. Therefore_ we left the key in the unlocked car and took photos of it in case anything subsequently happened to the car and we needed to be able show we had returned it in good condition to the airport.

There was a fault with the tyre pressure indicator which we were invited to ignore. What if there had been a tyre pressure issue?

Was a seamless rental and the perfect car for my visit in Greece. They met me at the airport and the car was clean and ready and they met me when I was ready to drop it off for my return. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to my friends.
